This years Freshers Ceilidh is an exciting collaboration between FolkSoc and UoS Irish Dance society!

Looking to end your Freshers week with an opportunity to try something new? The Freshers Ceilidh is a great chance to bring some friends and embrace the chaos of ceilidh dancing together as you jump and swing with the rest of your group.

No experience needed! Our callers will be on hand ready to teach the basics, so everyone can learn as we go, with a live band ready with music to accompany the group.

Lots of breaks will be available between sets so you can catch a breather, buy a drink from the bar in The Bridge,  and enter our Freshers Ceilidh charity raffle and see what prize you can win for you and your friends.

The Organisers

Folk Music Society

For folk musicians, dancers, and anyone else interested; we run a variety of events for both the society and the general (primarily student) public.

Irish Dance Society

The society provides the opportunity to learn or practice Irish Dancing and offers classes covering group ceili, soft shoe, and hard shoe for all abilities. We offer classes every Friday, and anyone is welcome regardless of experience, to take part in sessions of light and heavy styles, taught by our qualified teacher Conor. We are also aiming to hold workshops throughout the year taught by professional dancers from the industry themselves or previous society members. We are part of USD (Union Southampton Dance) and hold auditions for our Competition Squad which competes all over the country for the university. We also take part in Pure Dance, a university-wide dance show held in May each year giving members the opportunity to show off their skills learned all year in team dances choreographed in class, and performed in front of a large audience. The classes we hold are laid-back, fun and perfect for students with no experience in dance or Irish, or for those of you who have danced throughout their lives and want to continue their passion, whilst making new friendships and becoming part of our dance family. Come along and try us out, as one of the fastest growing dance societies on campus!!
